Messy Play Classes in Cheshire

Explore, create and learn through play

Squishing, splashing, pouring, mixing and making a mess are all wonderful ways for babies and young children to explore the world around them.

Our messy play sessions at Serenity Baby Clinic provide a welcoming, supportive environment where your little one can enjoy a range of exciting sensory activities without you having to worry about preparing the materials—or cleaning everything up afterwards.

Each session is relaxed, child-led and designed to give babies and young children the freedom to explore at their own pace.

Come along, get stuck in and make some lovely messy memories together.

What is messy play?

Messy play is a type of sensory play that encourages children to explore different materials using their hands, feet and senses.

During a session, your child may have the opportunity to:

  • Squish, scoop, pour and stir
  • Explore different colours, shapes and textures
  • Make marks and create patterns
  • Experiment with wet, dry, soft and sticky materials
  • Investigate cause and effect
  • Play independently or alongside other children

The focus is not on creating a perfect finished picture or craft. It is about allowing your child to investigate, experiment and enjoy the process.

There is no right or wrong way to take part. Your child can dive straight in, observe from the side or explore one activity at a time.

The benefits of messy play for babies and toddlers

Messy play is great fun, but it can also support many areas of your child’s early development.

Sensory development

Messy play introduces children to a variety of textures, temperatures, colours, sounds and smells.

These experiences can help your child learn how different materials feel and behave, while gradually becoming more comfortable with unfamiliar sensations.

Fine motor skills

Actions such as squeezing, pinching, scooping, pouring and picking up small objects help children practise the hand and finger movements they will later use for everyday activities such as feeding themselves, drawing and getting dressed.

Hand-eye coordination

Moving materials between containers, reaching for objects and using simple tools all encourage your child to coordinate what they can see with the movements of their hands.

Creativity and imagination

Messy play gives children the freedom to experiment without being told what the finished result should look like.

A tray of foam, dough, water or paint can become anything their imagination creates.

Early communication and language

Messy play provides plenty of opportunities to introduce descriptive words such as:

  • Soft and hard
  • Wet and dry
  • Smooth and bumpy
  • Full and empty
  • Cold and warm
  • Big and small

Talking about what your child can see, feel and do can support their understanding and developing vocabulary.

Confidence and independence

Child-led play allows little ones to make their own choices, test ideas and discover what happens next.

Completing small tasks—such as filling a cup, making a mark or finding a hidden object—can encourage confidence, curiosity and independence.

Social development

Group messy play sessions give children an opportunity to play alongside others, observe what other children are doing and begin practising skills such as sharing space and taking turns.

They also offer parents and carers a lovely opportunity to meet other local families.

Problem-solving skills

What happens when water is added? Will this object sink or float? How can I move this mixture from one container to another?

Through simple experiments, children begin to explore cause and effect and develop early problem-solving skills.

A relaxed, child-led messy play class

Some children will get stuck into every activity immediately. Others may prefer to watch, take their time or avoid certain textures.

All of these responses are completely normal.

Our sessions are relaxed and led by your child. There is no pressure for them to touch every material or complete every activity.

You can support your little one by playing alongside them, describing what they are doing and allowing them to explore at a pace that feels comfortable.

Cuddles, feeds, nappy changes and breaks are always welcome.

What happens during a messy play session?

Each class includes a selection of age-appropriate messy and sensory play activities for your child to explore.

Activities will vary between sessions and may include:

  • Water play
  • Child-friendly painting
  • Foam and bubbles
  • Dough and mouldable materials
  • Scooping and pouring stations
  • Edible or taste-safe sensory materials
  • Natural textures
  • Seasonal and themed activity trays
  • Mark-making
  • Simple creative activities

Sessions may have a different theme, giving your little one something new to investigate each time.

Please note that exact activities and materials may change depending on the age of the children attending and the theme of the session.

Who are the sessions suitable for?

Our messy play classes are designed for babies and young children who are ready to sit and explore, through to active toddlers and preschool-aged children.

Parents, grandparents and carers are all welcome to attend with their child.

Please check the individual booking information for the age range of your chosen session.

What should we wear?

Messy play really can get messy, so please dress your child in old clothes that you do not mind getting stained.

We also recommend bringing:

  • A complete change of clothes for your child
  • A spare top for the accompanying adult
  • A towel
  • Your usual changing bag
  • A bag for wet or messy clothing

Please avoid bringing your child in their favourite outfit. Although we choose materials carefully, some colours and substances may stain.

Supporting children who are unsure about messy textures

Not every child enjoys getting messy straight away.

Your child may prefer to:

  • Watch other children first
  • Explore using a spoon, brush or other tool
  • Touch materials with one finger
  • Keep their hands clean
  • Stay close to you
  • Avoid a particular activity completely

They will never be forced to touch or take part in anything.

Gentle, repeated opportunities to explore can help children become more familiar with different sensations, but the session will always be guided by their comfort and individual needs.

Please speak to us before booking if your child has additional needs or sensory sensitivities. We will be happy to discuss how we may be able to support them.

A welcoming activity for parents and carers too

Messy play is not only about child development. It is also an opportunity to enjoy uninterrupted time together.

You can follow your child’s interests, join their discoveries and enjoy the fun without worrying about the preparation or the cleaning afterwards.

Our friendly group environment also gives you the chance to meet other parents and carers from Nantwich, Crewe and the surrounding Cheshire and Shropshire areas.

Allergies and safety

Your child’s safety is extremely important to us.

Some messy play activities may use food-based or cosmetic ingredients. Please tell us about any known or suspected allergies, skin conditions, dietary requirements or additional needs before attending.

Although some activities may use taste-safe ingredients, the sessions are designed for play rather than eating. Parents and carers remain responsible for supervising their child closely throughout the class.

Please contact us before booking if you have any questions about the materials used.

Frequently asked questions

What age is messy play suitable for?

Messy play can be enjoyed by babies, toddlers and preschool-aged children. The appropriate starting age will depend on your child’s development and the activities included in a particular session.

Please check the age guidance shown when booking.

What if my child does not want to join in?

That is absolutely fine.

Some children need time to observe a new environment before they feel ready to explore. Your child can watch, use tools instead of their hands or choose only the activities they feel comfortable with.

There is no pressure to participate in everything.

Does my child need to be walking?

No. Many messy play activities can be enjoyed while sitting, supported sitting, crawling or standing.

Please select a session that is suitable for your child’s advertised age group.

What if my baby puts everything in their mouth?

Mouthing is a normal way for babies to explore.

We select activities with the age of the children in mind and may use taste-safe materials where appropriate. However, taste-safe does not mean that an activity is intended to be eaten.

Close adult supervision is required throughout the session.

Will the materials stain?

We choose our materials carefully, but messy play substances may stain clothing.

Please dress both yourself and your child in old clothes and bring a complete change of clothes.

Do I need to bring anything?

Please bring your usual changing bag, a towel, a full change of clothes for your child and a bag for wet or messy items.

Any additional requirements will be included in your booking information.

What happens if my child cries or needs feeding?

That is no problem at all.

Our sessions are relaxed and child-led. You are welcome to stop for cuddles, feeding, changing or a quiet break whenever your child needs one.

Can grandparents and other carers attend?

Yes. Parents, grandparents and carers are welcome to bring a child to the session, provided they have permission from the child’s parent or legal guardian.

Can siblings attend?

Please check the booking information for your chosen session or contact us before booking. Space and suitability will depend on the children’s ages and the format of that particular class.

Where are the messy play sessions held?

Sessions take place at Serenity Baby Clinic near Nantwich, within easy reach of Crewe, Whitchurch, Sandbach and surrounding areas across Cheshire and Shropshire.

Please check your booking confirmation for the full address and accessibility information.
